Mexican climber Viridiana Álvarez Chávez holds the world record for the fastest female to ascend the world’s three highest mountains

Many little girls dream of one day being on top of the world, but Mexican climber Viridiana Álvarez Chávez grew up and actually did so.

In an incredible one year and 364 days, she scaled three peaks to achieve an adventurous Guinness World Records title.

In an admirable display of strength and determination, she has broken the record for the fastest ascent of the top three highest mountains with supplementary oxygen (female).

Viridiana’s journey started with Everest (8,848 meters; 29,029 feet high) on May 16, 2017, followed by K2 (8,611 meters; 28,251 feet) on July 21, 2018, and finished at Kangchenjunga (8,856 meters; 28,169 feet) on May 15, 2019.

American alpinist Adrian Ballinger climbed K2, the “Savage Mountain” in 2019, reaching the summit of the second tallest mountain in the world without supplemental oxygen.

“K2 is a savage mountain that tries to kill you.” That is how climber George Bell described the infamous peak after the first American expedition in 1953–forever giving the mountain its nickname–The Savage Mountain. Sixty-six years later, Eddie Bauer mountain guides Adrian Ballinger and Carla Perez aim to summit the 8611-meter peak and join a community of explorers fewer in number than those who have been to outer space. Even more incredible, they both will attempt the feat without the use of supplemental oxygen. Every step of the way the team faces hazardous conditions, terrifying setbacks, and crushing misfortunes. But as Ballinger puts it, “I’ll go until the mountain tells me I can’t go anymore.”

Killer Mountain Rescue

Elisabeth Revol, a French climber stranded on top of one of Pakistan’s most deadly Himalayan mountains, nicknamed Killer Mountain, is safe after a dramatic rescue operation. The search for her Polish climbing partner, Tomasz Mackiewicz, has been called off.

An elite Polish climbing team, attempting the first winter ascent of nearby K2 came to the rescue, scaling Nanga Parbat overnight to rescue Ms Revol.

Ms. Revol was airlifted to a hospital in Islamabad. It has been reported that she has severe frostbite on her hands and feet.

Uta Ibrahimi aims to climb all 14 Himalayan peaks

There are 14 peaks above 8,000 metres (26,246 feet) in the world. All of them are in the Himalayas. Ibrahimi wants to climb them all by 2023. Through her adventures she hopes people to view life as possibility to reach peaks, no matter the challenge.

The first part of her mission, entitled ‘14 Utalaya Himalaya’ is expected to start on April or May this year, and will see her climbing the 8,516-metre Mount Lhotse, located between Nepal and Tibet, the fourth highest mountain on earth.

Later this year, she plans to also climb the world’s second-highest mountain, K2, at the border between China and Pakistan.

“K2 is known as the most dangerous peak in world,” Ibrahimi said.

 

National Geographic: Climbers Set Off to Be First to Summit K2 in Winter

K2, the world’s second highest mountain, is a more lethal than Everest. 84 people are known to have died on the mountain since record keeping began. Among mountaineers, K2 is considered to be more difficult to ascent. 306 people have reached the summit, compared to more than 4,000 that have reached the top of Mount Everest.

Fourteen mountains in the world reach over 8,000 meters. All have been climbed in winter except for K2, despite attempts that began in 1987, 2002 and 2012. But an elite team of Polish climbers will set off today in an attempt to make history by summiting K2 in winter.

The team, which consists of 13 climbers, will fly from Poland to Islamabad, Pakistan, where they will travel to the country’s mountainous border with China. Once there, it will take at least 100 porters to carry over a ton of equipment needed to establish a basecamp.

Only Mount Everest, which stands at 29,029 feet, is taller than K2, whose peak rises 28,251 feet above sea level. Climbers have reached its peak in the spring and summer, when conditions are less perilous, and have partially climbed the mountain in winter, but no one has reached the mountain’s peak in winter.
